BIM stands for Building Information Modelling. It is the process of generating and managing building data during its life cycle. The core of the BIM concept is a 3D shared dataset. Originally intended for building design and construction management, this concept has migrated to other aspects of engineering where it is equally applicable.

Whereas traditionally different design disciplines have worked with independently produced datasets often in 2D, the shared 3D data of the BIM system means that data is entered once and used by all disciplines. It is therefore less repetitive and less error prone.

Roundabout design has traditionally involved a variety of disciplines ranging from road design, traffic, drainage, safety. The BIM concept allows a more holistic approach to roundabout design and enables geometry, capacity analysis, ground model, surface drainage, cut and fill, land acquisition and much more to be considered simultaneously. The result is a faster design process making it easier to prototype designs, assess feasibility, and provide detailed 3D model information downstream into construction, operation and maintenance processes.
